Ordnance Survey created and maintains Great Britain's national mapping service.
In your holiday pack, we include Route Map(s) or Map Booklet(s). They are both strip/section maps of the Ordnance Survey (OS) maps for the route you are walking. Any grid references we give in your accommodation directions can also be found on the maps.
You navigate your route with the guidebook and route map/map booklet we include in your holiday pack. For greater detail and coverage of a wider area, you can also bring OS maps for the area you are walking through. We include the OS map numbers in the information in your holiday pack, which you can purchase separately.
Compass Recommended
We also recommend you carry a compass for navigation. It is important in bad weather and open areas. If you need to refresh your compass navigation skills, the information here is very helpful: A Beginner’s Guide to Using a Compass
Smartphones
For Smartphones we have evaluated and can recommend the OS Maps App Premium service. We found it clear and easy to use. This is a low-cost service, and you can subscribe monthly or yearly (cancel any time). Further details and how to subscribe are available here: OS Maps Subscriptions
You can view maps, routes and download and save routes with waypoints, or input your own waypoints. No signal? No problem. Download maps and routes to your Smartphone so you can use them wherever you go, even if you have no phone signal in an area.
Remember to have your Smartphone or GPS fully charged. Protect Smartphones against wet weather and being accidentally dropped. Always carry your guidebook, map and compass just in case your GPS or Smartphone fails. You may find a waterproof map case useful to protect your map and guidebook.
